Description of the male of Daguerreia inermis Soares & Soares, with biological notes on population size in the Gruta da Lancinha, Paraná, Brazil (Arachnida, Opiliones, Gonyleptidae) Zoologia
Pinto-da-Rocha,Ricardo.
The male of Daguerreia inermis Soares & Soares, 1947, a troglophilic harvestman, is described. Distribution records are given for caves of the Speleological Province of Vale do Ribeira and two non carbonatic areas (Telêmaco Borba and Arapoti, Paraná), in southeastern Brazil. The population of the Gruta da Lancinha (Paraná, Brazil) was studied from October 1988 to February 1989. The population size was estimated, by Fisher Ford's method, between 158-610 individuals. The sex ratio observed was 1:1.

Effectiveness of quadrat sampling on terrestrial cave fauna survey - a case study in a Neotropical cave Biological Sciences
Bichuette, Maria Elina; Simões, Luiza Bertelli; von Schimonsky, Diego Monteiro; Gallão, Jonas Eduardo.
Quadrat sampling is a method used for a long time in plant ecology studies but only recently it has been used with focus on fauna. For the cave fauna samplings, there are rare works applying this methodology. The present study compared the methods of quadrat sampling with direct search qualitative for terrestrial cave fauna. For this, we conducted five sampling collections in a limestone cave in central Brazil. Quadrat sampling contributed with 121 exclusive species and 716 specimens and direct search qualitative method contributed with 91 exclusive species and 355 specimens. Mann-Whitney test evidenced significant differences between the two methods. We demonstrated that quadrat sampling method was slightly more efficient to analyze the species richness...

Faunistic survey of sandstone caves from Altinópolis region, São Paulo State, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Zeppelini Filho,Douglas; Ribeiro,Alexandre Cunha; Ribeiro,Guilherme Cunha; Fracasso,Maria Paula Aguiar; Pavani,Marcelo Monetti; Oliveira,Otto Müller Patrão; Oliveira,Sérgio Adriano de; Marques,Antonio Carlos.
The fauna of eight sandstone caves of the region of Altinópolis, (Serra Geral Arenitic Speleological province, São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil) was surveyed. Our results improve the previous faunistic knowledge of the region, recording 15 new occurrences for Brazilian caves and 26 for Brazilian sandstone caves. The fauna is characterized by a large number of detritivores/omnivores such as crickets and cockroaches, and several predators like spiders and heteropterans in bat guano.

Iandumoema uai, a new genus and species of troglobitic harvestman from Brazil (Arachnida, Opiliones, Gonyleptidae) Zoologia
Pinto-da-Rocha,Ricardo.
A new genus and species of harvestman, landumoema uai, is described based on material from Gruta Olhos d'Água, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Its troglomorphisms include depigmentation on body, legs and eyes. It is the third troglobitic species of harvestman recorded from Brazilian caves and the second in the family Gonyleptidae.

Invertebrados cavernícolas da porção meridional da província espeleológica do Vale do Ribeira, sul do Brasil Zoologia
Pinto-da-Rocha,Ricardo.
From 1986 to 1992, I surveyed the invertebrate fauna of twelve limestone caves from South Ribeira Valley (State of Paraná, Brazil). Associated to walls in the entrace zone live Enoploctenus and Blechroscelis spiders, Goniosoma opilionids, Strinalia crickets, Latebraria amphipyroides moths, and Culicidae and Sciaridae dipterans. In aphotic zone, occur Plato spiders, Daguerreia inermis opilionids, Pseudonannolene strinatii diplopods, Smicridea caddisflies and the aquatic crustacean Aegla paulensis. I found in both zones Ctenus fasciatus spiders. Paronella collembolans, Zelurus travassosi heteropterans, Cholevidae and Anthribidae beetles, Phoridae dipterans and Braconidae wasps. One of the most important energy sources in these caves is the hematophagous bat...

Ituglanis boticario, a new troglomorphic catfish (Teleostei: Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae) from Mambaí karst area, central Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rizzato,Pedro Pereira; Bichuette,Maria Elina.
A new subterranean and troglomorphic species of Ituglanis Costa and Bockmann, 1993 is described from the carbonatic karst area of northeastern Goiás state, upper Tocantins River Basin, central Brazil, representing the sixth subterranean species of the genus described from the same region. Ituglanis boticario sp. nov. is diagnosed by a combination of unusual characters for the genus: body pigmentation forming longitudinal stripes, 7-8 pairs of ribs, presence of the anterior segment of the infraorbital laterosensory canal, and usually 8 pectoral-fin rays. Due to the absence of epigean populations and the presence of some degree of morphological specialization to the subterranean environment, it can be classified as a troglobite (i.e., exclusively...

New and little-known pseudoscorpions of the genus Roncus L. Koch (Neobisiidae, Pseudoscorpiones) from Serbia, Yugoslavia Naturalis
Ćurčić, Božidar P.M..
Two new species of Roncus L. Koch, 1873 (R. svarozici n. sp. and R. svanteviti n. sp.), collected in eastern and southeastern Serbia, Yugoslavia, are described and their distribution is given. A supplementary description of R. pljakici Ćurčić, 1973, is provided as well. The taxonomic diversity of the western and southern European “Roncus lubricus” species complex is discussed in view of the importance of some diagnostic characters. The possible role of R. svarozici n. sp. and R. parablothroides Hadži, 1937 in colonizing caves is considered as well as the divergent differentiation of some Balkan subterranean pseudoscorpions.

New and little-known species of Chthoniidae and Neobisiidae (Pseudoscorpiones, Arachnida) from the Movile Cave in southern Dobrogea, Romania Naturalis
Ćurčić, Božidar P.M.; Poinar, George O.; Sarbu, Serban M..
Two species of Roncus L. Koch, 1873 (Neobisiidae), new to science (R. ciobanmos n. sp. and R. dragobete n. sp.), and one species of Neobisium Chamberlin, 1930 [N. (N). biharicum Beier, 1939], collected in the Movile Cave, southern Dobrogea, Romania, have been described, diagnostic characters illustrated, and their geographic distribution analyzed. In addition, the description of Chthonius (Chthonius) monicae Boghean, 1989 (Chthoniidae), otherwise known only from two females, has been amended. The possible relationships of these species are discussed in view of the importance of some diagnostic characters and of the evolution of their cave habitat.
